Vanakkam Chennai Music Review

Vanakkam Chennai is the much anticipated third album of sensational Anirudh. After phenomenal success of 3 and Ethirneechal, Tamil industry has been eagerly waiting to see whether Anirudh can recreate his magic.  Anirudh has scored hat-trick in satisfying the masses and responsible for putting "Vanakkam Chennai" in the radar of expected upcoming movies. (Also Read: )

Song Track Reviews

"Chennai City Gangsta" is an energetic track similar to "Ethirneechaladi" number by the same successful combination of HipHop Tamizha and Anirudh. Expect this song loudly boasting Chennai pride to be played in CSK matches in the stadium. "Oh Penne Penne" sung by Vishal Dadlani is a loopy romantic number. Vishal carries the song in his unique intense rendition. "Osaka Osaka" and "Ailasa Ailasa" (pathos) are  folkish numbers mounted on similar tunes with different lyrics, orchestration and situations. Madhan Karky's lyrics are a big plus and gives depth to these songs written in "Theni" dialect.

"Engadi Porantha" starts unimpressively with "oppari" style singing, quickly shifts to a peppy tune powered by inane yet catchy lyrics sung by Andrea and Anirudh. "Oh Penne Penne (international)"  reminds us of frivolousness usually associated with boyband songs. Despite the heavily anglicized singing of "Hey Katril Yetho", the song offers a breezy listen backed by Celtic instruments and mildly uplifting tune. Only sore point in the album is repeated references to Rajinikanth in the songs, especially when many are trying to capitalizing on Superstar's fame to get attention.

Bottomline

Anirudh's care for details and layered orchestration despite the budget of the movie is commendable. Another highlight is that Anirudh has emerged as a full-fledged singer with due singing credits associated in at least 4 of the 7 tracks. Kudos to Anirudh for emerging as one of the very few music directors who can single-handedly increase the marketability of the movies through his song tracks.

' Iam glad with the over whelming response i received  for the title ,  the delay was unintentional , but we are glad that  in a way that delay also increased the hype around the movie. Ajith plays the central character with an characterization of a valiant warrior. Arya and Nayanthara play important characters that circle around Ajith. Ajith sir is on his popular salt and pepper get up of 'Mankaatha'.  (Also Read: )

In fact i had requested Ajith sir to introduce that get up in my film only but Venkat prabhu over took me and the rest was history .This look suits Ajith sir so well and i honestly believe no body can match him in this style...This is an action drama, pacy and racy script. It will be much faster than  our earlier film together Billa. This film will be an absolute entertainer , not only to Ajith sir's fans but also to classes and masses alike'.

Sonna Puriyathu Review
by Movies Cluster

When you are set to watch a film with Shiva in the lead, you would know exactly what to expect from the film. The movie will be filled with plenty of one-liners that parody other movies and it would be devoid of mass commercial elements such as fight sequences. ‘Sonna Puriyathu’ manages to fulfill these criteria but on the entertainment quotient, it is a half-baked attempt. (Also See: )

Plot

Shiva (Shiva), a dubbing artist by profession, is not willing to get married as he wants to live a life without any commitment. However, his mom is hell-bent on getting him married and finds a bride Anjali (Vasundhara Kashyap). It is soon revealed that Anjali is also against getting married. Will Shiva and Anjali get married or are there new twists in the story? Watch the film to know the answer. (Also Read: )

Performances

It looks like Shiva can never get tired of such roles. He has yet again impressed with an effortless performance. He especially scores when he sings the translated ‘Rosa Poo’ song and also during the Chinese film dubbing scenes. Also, the one-liners from him such as ‘Tasmac iladha Thamizhagama’ are spot-on and evoke instant appreciation from the audience. However, it is time for him to start doing varied roles as his films seem to have a strong déjà-vu feel.

Vasundhara Kashyap looks more than convincing in her role. She is equally impressive as an introvert and also when she reveals her true character. She looks good in all types of costumes and she might get more opportunities after this film. The supporting cast does a neat job but the scenes involving few characters look very clichéd. The grandma using Ipad all the time and a fat guy munching something throughout the film are few examples.

Technicalities

Yathish Mahadev’s songs are strictly average and the background score is passable. Saravanan’s cinematography is functional and is nothing extra-ordinary. TS Suresh’s editing in the first half is crisp while the second half needs some trimming.

Direction – Krishnan Jayaraj

Debutante director Krishnan Jayaraj starts off well in the first half with some wholesome packaging that suits Shiva. The first half ends on a promising note, with audience expecting new twists in the second half. However, the second half falls flat with many over stretched sequences. The game show sequence involving Sam Anderson and the marriage scene act as dampeners.

Bottomline

Sonna Puriyathu’ works in bits and pieces, but fails to entertain the audience throughout.

Rating – 2/5

Pattathu-Yaanai-Movie-Review

Pattathu Yaanai Review
by Movies Cluster

Both Boopathy Pandian and Vishal made good starts to their respective careers. Of late they have not been enjoying the type of success that they would probably hope for. Will Pattathu Yaanai see them back on track? Read on to find.
Plot

Time and again during the movie you constantly keep wondering whether you are watching a re-release of one of Vishal's earlier ventures. Such is the lack of originality in Pattathu Yaanai. A carefree youngster crosses the path of a local goon to save the heroine. When the hero is on the run we are revealed his flashback which again narrates a similar story that has been done to death by our commercial filmmakers. The occasional humour wakes you up from the slumber that you often get into.

Cast

Vishal sleepwalks through the role. The maker could have inserted scenes from the actor's previous films and there is a good chance that you won’t find out. Though there is nothing to complain about his performance it is high time Vishal takes more care about his projects. Aishwarya Arjun who makes her debut has very little to do. Santhanam saves the movie to a certain extent. The comedian has brought out variation in his slang and does reasonably well. But Pattathu Yaanai is no laugh riot.

There is a huge gap between the frequency of intended jokes and the jokes that you actually laugh at. Despite this, humour is the only reason that you can watch Pattathu Yaanai. Giving tough competition to the intended humour scenes are the over the top action sequences that have henchmen flying in the air. Then of course there are the numerous villains roaming around in Sumos and throwing tantrums that they won’t spare the hero. A talented actor like Jagan is absolutely wasted in an almost nothing role.

Music and technical Crew

Thaman’s songs are decent but nothing to rave about. The same can be said about the background score by Sabesh-Murali. The stunt sequence and the way they are captured could actually involve a lot of hard work. But when the intent of the sequence does not bother you then they obviously fall flat.

Boopathy Pandian’s strong point is humour and he could have better gone for a full - fledged comical entertainer. Most commercial entertainers often have scenes that remind us of past successful movies. But here even those scenes seem to have been taken from movies that did not do quite well.
Bottomline

Pattathu Yaanai is another reminder that making a neat commercial flick that can be enjoyed by all irrespective of the logical loopholes is not an easy job. Though often written off as an easy to make genre, such ventures require great talent and sadly this Pattathu Yaanai team seems to have fallen well short. If you are fine with a couple of laughs every twenty minutes then Pattathu Yaanai will not disappoint you.
